Root Canal Treatment

(Endodontic Treatment)

Root canal treatment is the treatment process we perform to save the tooth as a result of tooth decay, fracture, trauma and infection. If dental caries is not treated on time; caries progresses to the deep layers of the tooth and causes inflammation of the nerves in the tooth. It may cause tooth sensitivity, pain, infection in the root of the tooth, cyst at the root tip in advanced cases and even melting of the tooth root. Root canal treatment is a method of saving the tooth before tooth extraction.

Root canal treatment may take one or two sessions depending on the condition of the tooth. Contrary to the fears of our patients, it is a form of treatment that we usually do without feeling pain. It is performed under local anaesthesia and unlike the filling procedure, the procedure time is slightly longer. After root canal treatment, it is normal to have pressure sensitivity in the tooth during the eating of hard foods, which lasts up to one week. With the healing of the surrounding tissues of the tooth, this situation decreases over time. Root canal treated teeth are followed up with controls in our routine dentist examinations.

How is Root Canal Treatment Performed?

Root canal treatment is a treatment method usually applied in cases of tooth decay, fracture, trauma or infection. It is performed under local anaesthesia and unlike the filling procedure, the procedure time is slightly longer. This treatment process involves several steps and may usually require more than one session. In the first stage, the diseased pulp is removed and the pulp cavity and root canals are cleaned, expanded and prepared for root canal filling. If the treatment is spread over more than one session, the tooth is protected with a temporary filling. Then the temporary filling is removed and the pulp cavity and canal are filled permanently. In the final stage of treatment, a crown is applied to the tooth to restore its natural appearance. If the tooth is broken, a post may also be needed to repair the tooth before the crown is placed.

In which cases is root canal treatment performed?

Root canal treatment is the last solution to be used in the treatment of a decayed tooth. However, various dental problems may indicate the need for root canal treatment. These symptoms include spontaneous pain in the tooth, pain that intensifies especially at night and does not go away with painkillers, pain during chewing or biting, sensitivity to hot and cold foods, swelling around the tooth, gum and/or related lymph nodes, fistula caused by infection of the tooth or discolouration of the tooth. These conditions usually indicate that the nerves in the tooth are affected and treatment is needed. Root canal treatment is used as an effective method in the treatment of such conditions. People who encounter these symptoms should consult an endodontic specialist for a detailed examination and determine the appropriate treatment plan.

How Long Does Root Canal Treatment Take?

Root canal treatment may take one or two sessions depending on the condition of the tooth. Sessions can last up to 45 minutes. In the first session of dental canal treatment, the canal is effectively cleaned and shaped. By applying local medication to the cleaned area, harmful microorganisms are effectively killed. In the second session of the root canal treatment, if there is no inflammation in the canal, if there is no sensitivity in the patient's tooth, if the x-ray results are clean and no disorder is observed in the surrounding tissue, the filling of the tooth is applied. Contrary to the fears of our patients, it is a form of treatment that we usually do without feeling pain.

There are some important points that patients should pay attention to after root canal treatment. First, it is recommended to avoid alcohol and cigarette consumption, as these habits can delay the healing process. It is recommended not to smoke or consume alcohol for at least the first 24 hours. Additionally, it should not be forgotten that pain may be felt after root canal treatment and this is normal. The severity of pain may vary from person to person, so it is recommended to use painkillers prescribed by your doctor.

It is important not to apply any force to the treated area after root canal treatment. During the healing process, especially in the first 3 days, no force or pressure should be applied to the treated area. During this period, patients should be careful not to use the treated tooth area, if possible. It is also important to stay away from hot and cold foods for a while. It is generally recommended to avoid hot and cold foods for the first 2-3 hours.

Teeth cleaning requires special attention after root canal treatment. It is important to take care of the hygiene of the teeth, but during this process harsh cleaning tools that may affect the treatment should be avoided. Soft-head toothbrushes are a recommended option for sensitive teeth after treatment. These brushes provide teeth cleaning without harming the healing process.

After root canal treatment, it is normal for the tooth to have pressure sensitivity when eating hard foods, lasting up to a week. This situation decreases over time as the healing occurs in the surrounding tissues of the tooth. Root canal treated teeth are monitored with checks during our routine dentist examinations.
